AHS Class of 1969 30th Reunion

Over eighty class mates and guests from the AHS Class of 1969 gathered at the home of Tom and Alice Dunnavant, Saturday July 24th,1999 for an old fashioned backyard bar-b-que. Despite the heat, a fun time was had by all who attended from as far away as East Lansing, Michigan, Little Rock and Hot Springs, Arkansas, Valdosta, Ga., Indianapolis, In., St. Louis, Mo. and Mobile as well as points in between.

The back yard was decorated with festive tents, draped tables, luminary centerpieces and tikki torches. In an attempt to help beat the heat, the air-conditioned garage had been transformed into a replica of the old High School's athletic dressing room complete with pictures of classmates who participated in football, basketball, tennis, cheerleading and majorettes. More luminaries helped set the mood.

The festivities were kicked off by master of ceremonies State Court of Criminal Appeals Judge and former Limestone County District Attorney the honorable Judge James (Jimmy) H. Fry who welcome the attendees and offered a tribute to six deceased classmates. Those being Mike Wilburn, Patsy Patterson, Joe Wood, Ann Hess, Jimmy Oran and Reggie Britt.

Joe Warren, currently of Ozark brought an edited video that included the Athens Golden Eagles' 1969 football highlights as well as a special tribute to fallen team member, Mike Wilburn. Wilburn was the mainstay of the AHS running game for three years winning many local and state grid iron honors. He later attended UNA where he played college ball and set many school and conference records, some of which still stand today.

Classmates joined together in the songs of the era. Formally forgotten tapes of local bands like the Intruders, the Highwaymen, the Esquires and the Impala's were played as classmates shared memories and renewed friendships. For a few fleeting hours, the Athens High School Class of 1969 relived many cherished memories of school days gone by.

The class wishes to thank Sheriff Mike Blakely, the Houston Library, Fowler's Rentals and Whitt's Bar-B-Que. for their help and assistance in making the event a successful one.
